See, I don't know if I should even be mentioning these as obviously Babybear has long since 'weaned' but I wanted to tell the mums of older children about my latest healthy snack 'discoveries'. Check me out, I'm like Columbus sailing the ocean blue here...
Anyway, I love a Brazil nut, I think they're pretty healthy, zinc and all that kind of stuff, and I probably started giving them to Babybear when she was about 16 months old. She did take fairly big chunks of them to begin with (not that she choked but I was understandably watchful) but the more molars she has, the better she's got at eating them. Plus they are quite soft as nuts go, because they're so oily.
They're easy to get hold of in Boots and M&S nowadays, as well as yer general supermarket, which means that as an 'oh my god we're out and I've got NOTHING' standby they're pretty good.

Before you race out and try brazil nuts or any other nuts with your child, you should know that the Unicef baby friendly initiative (which Gill Rapley was the deputy director of) states that you should not give nuts to children under the age of 5 years due to the high risk of choking. For more information check out the link below.

well, yes. it's a toss-up, isn't it? there does come a point imo at which you think that your child can eat food properly and in a timely fashion. but that's just imo. for me, dd always ate brazil nuts in such a way as she wasn't swallowing more than brazil nut mush, so i felt fine about it personally. say for example grapes... i do cut them in half but sometimes that's not practical or she's at someone else's house etc. so i also prioritise the manner in which she eats them. she knows if she gets a whole one that she MUST burst it in half before the whole thing goes into her mouth. so in a way, that does seem to me to be a good lesson in how to deal with life and not choke, iykwim?
