I mean I know I should care, really, but I can't make myself. I've given away our breadmaker and everything. (To be fair, I wouldn't have done if I had more counter space but it was just So Big).
To give you a historic spin on the matter, my great-grandma had to be physically restrained from sprinkling salt on my food when I was a baby as according to her just a few grains would stimulate the taste buds. Now, presumably that means my mother and grandmother had endured the same treatment and yet their kidneys haven't failed.
I appreciate, however, that a sample of two isn't scientifically compelling. Not only that, food has changed a lot since those days and processing adds layers of salt that we don't even taste any more. But I'd still have to say that it's not something I'm enormously troubled by. I don't add salt to things like pasta or veg, and we never add any at the dinner table, so I don't really pay much attention to salt in ham, cheese and bread since Babybear's turned one. Plus we've always preferred unsalted butter.
We do add a bit of veal stock to casseroles and maybe some reduced salt Marigold to soups (although is it only me or does it make things taste awfully same-y?) so I think that makes us fairly virtuous on the salt front. Plus, Babybear drinks water well, so I'm not worried about dehydration.
Am I kidding myself, however? Should I be more stressed about it? What do you lot do? Answers on a postcard please...

Salt - how much do we care?
Comments
Re: Salt - how much do we care?
It's a case of "Now she's one, salt is fun". Minky didn't really have very much before her first birthday and even now it's only what you find in bread, cheese and ham. She drinks well, so I don't worry there. I did refrain from giving her a second crumpet for breakfast the other day as they each contained 0.9g of salt and would have taken her to the limit (so to speak). Actually, it's marginally interesting that Sainsbury's crumpets are 0.9g each whereas Tesco's are only 0.6g. See, I don't care about salt at all despite the fact I can quote amounts in any given food.

I'm with you, I do occasionally add up the salt in a cheese and marmite toastie, which is our staple 'I can't be arsed' lunch, and get slightly worried, but I don't add salt and always have a cup of water within her reach.
The most I do is limit her to 2 slices of bread a day or whatever salty equivalent she is eating (potaot scones, fishfingers etc) but life's too short to count everything! Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?

We are also reasonably relaxed about salt - again, I don't add it to anything but if it is in something readymade I don't worry too much as he loves his water. He swiped a crisp off his father the other day and was VERY keen to try another (to the extent of throwing a tantrum when he wasn't allowed one - I thought they didn't do that for another year! but I digress).
I'm so relieved other people have "can't be arsed" lunches. We do cheese and tomato sauce toasties, which of course can be grandly referred to as "pizza". Re: Salt - how much do we care?

I'm with you Aitch to be honest - I never worry about salt, as we never cook with it or add it to anything - occassionally some recipes do suggest seasoning and I add or not depending on how diligent i feel. However any food specifically for Xavier never contains it, so I figure the odd bit in bread and cheese wont really matter, so long as he is having a balanced diet...which he is thank god!
But then once in a blue moon, I will have a panic and think is he having too much cheese/salt etc etc - but then i forget about it and think that common sense prevails...hope i'm right - see another paranoid moment! Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?

Well I love my breadmaker! I prefer to use the dough programme (I'm no good at dough by myself) and then make bloomers and chelsea buns, and for Beeble - home-made breadsticks: cruchy ones, soft ones, all sorts of flavours: great for food on the move, by the way...
(Off topic - quite right, Aitch: not that you're a bluestocking or anything...;-p It's been my standard web sig for almost 10 years. It was my friend's toddler's interpretation of my cat's name. Saki's Clovis is morally dodgy, elegant, a bit wicked and very sure of himself: it seemed just right for my tuxedo wearing half-Siamese... And no - I'm not a cat bore in real life...) Re: Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?
there are loads of tv programmes about saki at the moment on bbc4, have you seen any? i think there's an adaptation of sredni vashtar and the lumber room tonight.

I'm in the Chilled-and-Relaxed-About-Salt camp too. Most of her food is freshly prepared by the loving hands of her mother (hmm.. perhaps Dad needs to get in on the act) so none of that stuff gets salt bunged into it.
On the ready-made food front its Weetabix, Cheerios, houmous, bread, rice cakes, bread sticks - most of which are either salt-free or she has such small quantities that I can live with it. I think there's more danger if we were the kind of family that lived off ready-meals and were sharing those with her. But, frankly, we can't afford ready meals anymore since my salary stopped and (whisper it) I do actually quite enjoy cooking. Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?

Hi
I do not worry about salt anymore. I never add salt in cooking or at the table, but I do not even check labels for salt content now (16 months). I am ashamed to say he even eats crisps! Re: Salt - how much do we care?

We do worry about salt. A bit anyway. Enough not to give our daughter processed foods - but that can only be a good thing right?
I worry more about getting enough iron into the little monkey though. Re: Salt - how much do we care?

I don't own any salt but I'm not too worried about checking everything. We do have the occasional visit to see Ronald, but I give her fruit and veg cause the salt levels are horrendous! (I must point out this is only with her cousins, I hate the place and don't tend on making it a habit when she's older!)

Did you see the article in today's Independent about soups. Apparently many of the most popular ready made soups are 1% salt, with some (scarily the organic lovely ones) at 3.5g per serving.
Guess that's one thing I won't be giving DD. Although might be worth making some soup for comedy purposes once I get the digicam out! Re: Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?

Hello, where do you get low-salt stock? I made my own for Kicky til she was 1, but I'm afraid I'm trying to get out of it. I've made a chicken thing this morning for her with a tiny bit of ordinary veg stock cube, but I'd feel better if I could get the lo-salt version, although I'm sure it's still very salty. I can't get it at my local - huge - Sainsbury's.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Salt - how much do we care?
i think Kallo is low salt, you get them in all sorts of places. like our local fruit shop/deli place but i've also seen them in supermarkets. also Marigold do a lower salt vegan version. but in all honesty they both taste like crap, imo. i just use loads of onion, garlic, celery and herbs and ditch the stock altogether.

Hello, thanks for this. I went to Whole Foods, the giant and controversial new organic superstore in W London ( it IS very exciting and beautiful but very expensive and an absolute temple to consumerism) and picked up Marigold and Kallo. You're probably right about the taste, but I'm too stuck in my ways to cook without stock.
