To tomatoes. Now my friend Jen, queen of all things allergic, will be able to attest to the fact that I suggested this might be the case some months ago. Babybear has aways been utterly fascinated and beguiled by tomatoes right up until the moment she puts them in her mouth, at which point she winces as if scalded, shudders and puts them down again. Game girl that she is, however, she tends to repeat this about ten times during the course of the meal.
So I remember saying to Jen that I wondered if she might have an intolerance to them and was actually feeling a reaction on her tongue rather than just a simple dislike of the taste. I never pushed them on her, just ate them all up myself, as far as I was concerned she liked cooked tomatoes and that was enough for me.
Weirdly, though, at 17 months old I think a proper intolerance is coming to the fore. If tomato touches her lips or face she now gets marks that look for all the world like nettle stings, all white and raised and surrounded by quite livid red patches. They don't come up quite immediately and they do hang around for an hour or so afterwards. Normally she doesn't have the same reaction to cooked tomatoes but I have noticed a certain redness once or twice recently and she does appear to be going off tomato-based sauces. Which is a right pain, I can assure you, as I like nothing more...
Anyway, what now? Do I ignore it? It doesn't seem to bother her but it bothers me. Will she become allergic to other things? Will she become allergic to tomatoes, even? Is there anything I can do at this stage? Please help, I am utterly ignorant of this sort of thing.

When we first started weaning dd, she would get a rash on her face where it had come into contact with tomato.
Since we were seeing the paed for her milk intolerance anyway, I asked him about it, and showed him a photo I'd taken of the rash. He said that she'd probably (hopefully) grow out of it, and to continue giving tomatoes, as avoiding them would be a complete PITA. We followed his advice, and she now appears to be ok with them (an occasional tiny red patch will appear, but soon goes again). Now, I have to say that dd's rash wasn't as bad as Babybear's sounds - she didn't get the nettle style bumpy bits with hers, and it didn't seem to bother her at all. Sadly Babybear's does sound rather more like a true longer term intolerance. With dd's milk intolerance, the paed recommended leaving her off milk until 18 months, then trying her with a teaspoon of yoghurt, and taking it from there. The dietician that my h/v spoke to on my behalf, however, said to wait until she was 9 months, offer her some, wait til 12 months if she still reacted, but then to offer it every 3 days!! I think that the point of me telling you this, is to demonstrate that however many people you ask, you will get as many different responses, so might as well do what YOU feel is right. I think I'd prob try and avoid them for a couple of weeks, and then give just in cooked form for a while, but not stressing if she has them uncooked once in a while when you're not the chef. I have just read this about tomatoes, I think squeeker might have a bit of a thing with either tuna or mayo, as you may have guessed I gave her a tuna sandwich, after she stole a huge bite of mine yesterday, and after each tasting she had a red patch around her mouth and cheeks(where it had been smeared!) this is the only thing she has eaten(new) on both days. Today she had quite a lot and the "rash" was bigger. Has anyone else had this? Would you think it is the tuna or mayo? Should I try her on them seperately? Was going to try this tomorrow.
On a slightly different note, I am loving blw, squeeker is eating like a trooper, even hubby is enjoying seeing her eat (he's a worrier!) big sister angel loves putting food in front of her. I tell everyone about blw and have got a few people interested, I really think she is eating so many more foods than if I was mushing them, her newest taste is pasta and pesto (good tip) and she LOVES it, even though she does look like the hulk when she's finished!!!lol Re: Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Has she had egg before? If not then it could be that in the mayo, but if she's been okay with egg previously, then probably more likely to be the fish.
I guess the only way to find out for sure is to try her with each one separately. Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Allergy queens, your advice please?

DD got those wheals the 3rd time she had egg. The first time was just red, second time was red and a bit raised, and the third time she got red raised blisters and looked a right mess. Thing was though, it was scrambled egg the third time, that was painted all over her face, and the first couple of times it was rather more solid egg in spanish omelette. I was quite worried about the wheals, but NHS direct weren't. She didn't have any trouble with her breathing or swelling in her mouth so they said just keep an eye on her. She certainly hasn't had an allergic reaction to eating egg containing foods since, although I haven't tried smearing scabby egg on her face. It was definitely a topical reaction, and not a proper allergy.
We've had a similar (but much milder) reaction to fresh tomatoes, but not tomatoes cooked in a sauce. Dd isn't keen on raw anyway, so I'm not too worried. Hope this info helps. JennT Re: Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Allergy queens, your advice please?

josh gets this when he has peas, and lentils as from today. they are really itchy and last about an hour, he gets them on his hands, face, round his mouth and anywhere else thats been in contact with the nasty food, ive been told to avoid giving them to him. im not sure i was given a reason, i already knew i wasnt going to give them him again as the first time he was itching for nearly an hour. i use piriton now, it stops the itching lasting as long.

I get the same sort of things - raw tomatoes bring my skin up in an itchy, blotchy raised rash, but oddly I can eat them with no problems and cooked tomatoes are fine. I only remembered this allergy when he-who-must-be-obeyed developed a cherry tomato fetish (how many are too many in a babies daily intake ?) and dealing with the fall out zone of this.
I'd just knock off tomatoes for a bit and then retry - it doesn't mean that she'll necessarily react to anything else or that it'll get worse. I'd try rubbing a bit of tomato onto her arm first to see whether she reacts there rather than feeding it to her, just in case though. This type of reaction is called urticuria if you're interested. Re: Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Allergy queens, your advice please?
thanks all, i think i'm just going to stop giving her raw tomatoes and hope that she loses the wee reaction to cooked ones in the meantime. good idea about rubbing it on her arm, though, i do always feel bad when i see the marks on her face.

Apparently, the skin reaction thing to tomato and tomato products is very common - something to do with there naturally being histamine in them, which is destroyed to some extent when they are cooked. I don't think it is a true allergy, as you are reacting to the histamine in the tomato rather than producing histamine yourself like you do when you are allergic to a food.
Anything more than redness where it has touched the skin - like coughing, wheezing etc might be signs of a true allergy though, so keep an eye out. Re: Re: Re: Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Allergy queens, your advice please?
i will do, Katy, thanks.

Aitch that sounds like an allergic reaction to me. Both my dds are allergic and the first sign is always 'nettle rash', however tomatoes are an irritant and an allergy specialist told us to put vaseline on dd2s face when she has such foods [tomato, strawberry, kiwi] so you can tell if allergic or just irritating. Maybe worth a go...

Just created an account so no longer anon! If you thinks its an allergic reaction they completely cut out of the diet for at least two weeks, then slowly reintroduce, if it happens on reintroduction then you know the culprit!

Gosh - that info about histamine in toms is really interesting!
Angelcake loves them - they are one of the few reliable veg-type things she will eat, and she used to get quite red around her mouth and on her arms and the backs of her hands when eating them. I assumed it was because the acidic juice irritated sensitive / delicate skin, which I suppose it does, but now I know why! Re: I think we have a little intolerance. Allergy queens, your advice please?
I was chatting to someone at the weekend about contact allergies. She works with families with allergic children. She says many parents smear their childs face with vaseline (at least around the mouth) before they have certain foods. I guess if tomatoes were in lots of your meals/kids particularly liked them and there were no other symptoms, it might be worth a whirl.

For pity's sake - it already says that three posts up. I am a simpleton.
