"I have recently taken up BLW with my 8 month old and thought I would pass
on my fishcakes recipe for those who would like it - as it has gone
down a storm...
Cook in ovenproof dish white fish (haddock/cod etc) in milk until
turns opaque (check there are no bones) Gas mark 5 approx 10-15 mins
Boil some potatos and mash, no butter /milk needed.
Finely chop some herbs, flat leaf parsley is good - but it is up to you.
Add fish and mash together, beat an egg and add small amount to mash to bind
Flour your hands and take small amounts of the mixture to make small patties.
Dip each patty in the beaten egg and dip in bread crumbs (stale or oven dried if possible).
Place on lightly oiled baking tray and bake in oven gas mark 5 for about 10 minutes or until lightly golden
They have been fantastic, I put them straight in the freezer to keep fresh and take what I need as and when....Enjoy!"

Carrie's Fish Cakes

Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes
Minky had salmon for the first time today. Wasn't sure whather she would like it, but she ate half a tin so I think it was a hit! The other half I mixed with some mashed potato and then shaped and rolled in oatmeal. No egg for us, but I think they are holding together ok. They are currently in the oven...

Hope they went down well - that sounds even quicker and easier - let me know how they went as salmon is a good alternative to cod and better on the environment too (i think!)

Hi Moomin,
Did these turn out ok without the egg? We're avoiding it right now and i've been on the lookout for an alternative to use in fish cakes? Re: Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes
Hello - they went straight into the freezer but were pretty solid. I didn't put milk or butter in them so they weren't too wet. I think they'll be fine.
Does Aaron have an egg allergy? Minky does, it's the only think I'm positive she can't have. We didn't try her with it until she was one, so I'm used to avoiding it. She loves cakes though and it's pretty sad that she can't have most of them. Re: Re: Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes

we think he does, i was very relaxed about introducing food as theres no family history but he had some of the carrot and cheese muffins on here one morning and his eyes puffed right up, i'm half hoping it was a one off but not trying eggs again for a couple of months (hes only coming up to nine months now) then he can have some egg on its own so i know for sure. Suddenly every recipie i find seems ot have egg in it though, and i feel so bad that he can't have some things.
There was a recipie on the yahoo group for egg free cake a couple of days ago, no idea if its any good but was thinking of using it for Aarons bday cake when the time comes if i've no other options. I hope minky and ds both grow out of it and get to enjoy lots of cakes in a couple of years time. Re: Re: Re: Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes
We gave Minks scrambled eggs (first egg) at Christmas. She loved it. Then her mouth was covered with hives. The dietician recommended we wait six months before trying again and then it's an egg sandwich in the doctor's surgery just in case. I think this was because she had a reaction to the first exposure.
Often babes who are allergic to egg can tolerate it in baked products. We have tried her with cake and it seems to give her wind and diarrhea. Poor kiddy. Really hope they do grow out of it. Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes

Moomin, are you bf and if yes do you eat eggs and does it affect minky? i've been kinda avoiding them since, not sure if its affected ds before and i just put it down to something else as wasn't looking out for a reaction. My hv is pretty rubbish and seemed to think that since i haven't been avoiding any foods there wasn't a big problem, she was very laidback about the whole thing.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes
Have just found this. I am breastfeeding - just about! I do eat eggs but I don't know whether it affects her or not. I have no idea whether the allergenic part of egg protein would get into breastmilk. I guess it could.
I have never modified my diet to try and help her eczema. Her skin is manageable with emolients and I haven't had to use steroids yet. So, I haven't felt the need to eliminate a ton of stuff from my diet for several weeks to see if there is a difference. If her skin had been worse, I might have done this. Re: Carrie's Fish Cakes

These sound yummy. About the freezing - do you freeze them before the final cooking or after? And if after, how do you reheat them?

hello
i freeze them after baking and then reheat once only when required or even serve cold my son likes them both ways which is lucky - i was worried about reheating but spoke to my mom who was a domestic science teacher and she said it was ok - so far there has been no problems so I hoping it is ok - mind you i suppose you could freeze before cooking and cook when needed too - never thought of that - good luck! Thank you! I'll experiment... Never been much of a planner-ahead with food but I guess that's going to have to change as of tomorrow (when Piglet will be 6 months and BLW here we come!)

Hiyah... just wondering if anyone has tried their bubbas on sardines yet? My nephew adores them and we thought we might let the Weeble try them, poss. mashed on toast... I know they are good for him, but bleugh... the smell... ugh. Might have to let DH do this one. Have any of you had any success with the stinky fishes?
Re: Fishy hijack
I think there is a conversation about sardines somewhere else, but I'm not sure where...
Anyway, we have done sardines. It was her first fish - everyone thinks I'm cruel. Minky either picked it up to eat it (it's quite solid) or had it off my fork. Big metal forks so much nicer than small plastic forks with pictures of caterpillars on them. She'll eat a whole sardine leaving the other two in the tin for me to scarf down on toast. Yum, yum, yum. I'm really into fish for her at the moment. She likes most of it (tuna is the exception) and I'm very pleased to be able to get protein into her, as she's not a meat fan. Plus, sardines have lots of calcium. Actually, the previous sardine conversation may have been on the calcium/breastfeeding thread. Sardines in oil have more calcium than sardines in tomato sauce, but I do like tomato sauce. Re: Re: Fishy hijack

Cool, thank you for that. I did do a search, but... anyway, we are going to try it tomorrow. I'm sort of hoping he hates them!
Lazy Fish Cakes
Well, the lazy fishcakes (tin salmon + mash potato) have gone down a treat. They are a bit crumbly due to the lack of egg, but you can re-cake the bits as you go along. I imagine Carrie's are much nicer but I am a lazy, leftovers mum!
