I've seen people recommend putting a shower curtain down, which seems a
bit of a faff to me but might work for some. You can also buy a plastic
sheet for £3.95 on ebay. £3.95! For a plastic sheet, for god's sake.
Plus postage, naturally.
I'd like to get a nice piece of lino,
probably about a metre by a metre but I haven't got that organised yet
so at the moment I'm making do with some old washable wallpaper that I
found lying about my gaff. It's working rather well, I must say. And
when I say washable, I mean silk-backed, 80 quid a metre, la-di-dah.
It's not mine... if only.
Anyway, something is better than
nothing. We've got floorboards, it was a flippin' nightmare trying to
get bits of cheese out of the cracks. As the actress said to the bishop...
PS A rather charming woman called Nell has just left a comment to suggest putting a newspaper down on the floor so that when it gets splattered you can just wheech off the top layer. It's a good idea, and as soon as I work out how to show the comments under the posts you will all be able to see it without clicking anything. Any ideas as to how I do this? Anyone?

lovely helpful site! We just have newspaper under the highchair - cheap and easy to rip off the top sheet when it's plastered in mushy banana.

Get a dog! We end up with no mess on the floor! Seriously though, the poor dog's not as lucky any more. In the beginning loads of titbits were dropped his way but now that my LO is getting the hang of this eating lark (he's 11 months next week) he's nowhere near as messy- it is quite amazing how much actually goes in his mouth. He only throws it around now when he's had enough.

Hi there - just picked up the link to this site from the Yahoo B-LW page. As a mother of a 6.5 month old who's in the early stages of B-LW, it's really great to read about other's experiences. Just a thought re mess factor - how about using the waterproof tablecloth material you can buy by the metre from cheapo shops such as Dunelm. Should stand up to the rigours of B-LW.

Good thinking, that woman. Thanks for that. How are you getting on with the mess so far? I agree with Lisa, by the way, it seems to be getting better for Baby A, right up to the moment when she decides that dinner is over and she flips everything left onto the floor.

So far I've yet to take my own advice and invest in a floor covering, so each meal is followed by a session of picking bits out of the carpet, but as I'm planning to try out your toast, pear, tomato pesto recipe for tea today, I reckon I'd better make it my afternoon mission to get some protection!

I've just bought a couple - one for home, one for Nanny's - of floor mats from Morrison's for something stupid like 79p! I haven't opened them yet, but I'm not too worried - at that price I'm happy if they are disposable!
