Re: Welcome to Baby Led Weaning - two friends, two babies, no spoons...

Hiya
Hiya,
I think this is great.

There are so few places you can go to find information about BLW, so this is really good. And it's nice to hear other mums opinions and to actually be able to see pictures of other little ones eating, excellent!!

My son, Archie, is now 28 weeks old (yesterday) so we have been doing BLW for 2 weeks. Unlike your LO, my boy didn't start eating straight away...
We are still breastfeeding lots, so are not worried, even though well-meaning friends and health visitors seem to be.

Short background:
We have family history of eczema and hay fever, so are trying to leave known allergens for as long as possible. I have heard so many people say that their LO's didn't eat veg, but loved toast, but with toast containing wheat I couldn't offer him that. Attempted to bake my own wheat free bread, but the less said about that the better I think.. Not one of my proudest moments!

This is how we got started:

We offered everything and anything, mainly organic veg, but other things as well.

Archie touched and held everything we offered. He even took some mash from my plate once, but that was very messy in an all over the sofa kind of way (hubby not happy with me) He absolutely loved playing with potatoes (mashing them up in his hands) and cabbage (throwing them about with his fists). Broccoli also, but so very messy you are not gonna believe it. It sticks to his skin, gets underneath his clothes and even travels to other parts of the house!!! He sure loved playing with it though, so I suppose that makes it worth it just for that.

Most other steamed veg and fruits, he touched and made "yuk" face. Specially banana, which he seemed to hate almost, until I tried doing it the way you recommend on here, chop it in half and peel down one side. Excellent!

He even put things in his mouth, then made "funny face" and rejected it.

I got ecstatic when I found a bit of carrot in his nappy one day, only to find out by "helpful" hubby, that he had put carrot into Archie's mouth, because "he has to learn what to do with food, otherwise he will never eat". Men!!! So supportive when you talk to them, but when it comes to actually doing it so very impatient (and he probably hadn't listened to a word I had said about BLW)!!

Anyway, I kept his dad (same person) away from direct contact during the following feeds and a few days later I found 2 tiny specks of cauliflower. Wow!!! He had actually swallowed something on his own. Possibly by mistake, but still.

Then there was ages until anything happened again. Every day I offered food and every day I inspected the nappies with great interest.
A couple of days ago he got his face covered with potato and sweet potato but not sure if he ate any..

Then finally yesterday he was offered baby sweet corn and mange touts and believe it or not, after having it in his mouth 3 times he actually bit off a piece of baby sweet corn and chewed, chewed, chewed with a disgusted look on his cute little face, and then swallowed it.

Both me and hubby were sooo very proud.

So this is just the start, but it is so exciting to watch my little son getting to know foods. I'm sure it's much nicer, for both of us, than spoon feeding and a lot less hassle for me (bonus)..

Also the other day Archie drank water from a glass, with me holding it of course, but still. I feel so proud of my little bundle.

Potato and sweet potato all over his face... Baby sweet corn bitten off in his right hand...
