They are sometimes absolutely disgusting when they are over-ripe... they get yucky stringy bits in them and taste quite sour. They should taste kind of oily and rich (like Morv) says, but the flavour is surprisingly delicate and tends to be a bit bland without a truckload of lemon juice and salt. or tabasco. i love them but it's a Marmite thing...
