I use a mat because when The Weeble hurls banana/carrot/potato/chocolate (just kidding about that last one) onto the floor, I can pick it up and hand it back to him. I don't think I'd want to do that with old newspapers. Of course, he is now a dab hand at throwing past the edges of the mat...
